lot # 24 - antarctica 1901-04 discovery expedition
1904 (Jan 5) Christchurch Weekly Press postcard depicting "The Discovery in Lyttelton Harbour" on the front and "The Stern, Rounded to Resist Ice Pressure" on the reverse, written by Len Burgess, a crew member on the Second Relief Expedition ship "Morning", to Master Leonard Storey in Christchurch. Written on the day the ship reached the ice at McMurdo Sound with the message "We have arrived at last. Capt. Scott & Dr. Wilson came on board as soon as we made fast. They report all well on board & a nice fine winter. Capt. Scott & Dr. Wilson looked very well", posted three days after the ship returned to Lyttelton, with a N.Z 1d tied by Lyttelton squared circle (April 4), and a Christchurch arrival c.d.s. A fine and rare use of this card from the Antarctic, written on the Second Relief Expedition ship "Morning". Photo on Page 7.
