lot # 1664 - g.b postal history postage due mail
1870 (Oct 27) Cover with enclosed letter from Edinburgh to India franked 1/- and 1d, with boxed "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE / DEFICIENT POSTAGE 3d" and circular framed "St. BG / As 2". The 3d charge mark used on mail transferred to the more expensive Brindisi route when the Marseille route was suspended during the Franco-Prussian War. Small corner repair and a large closed tear, nevertheless a good looking example of this scarce handstamp which is very unusual on outgoing mail, the majority of examples occurring on incoming mail from India or Australia. Photo on Page 240.
Suggested price: £ 600-700
