lot # 6162 - grossbritannien
1864 (September 5): Entire letter from London to Amsterdam franked with 1858 2 d. blue, plate 13, and 3 d. rose, plate 8, tied by neatly-struck London duplex, boxed red "L2" late fee marking applied, paid by the 2d. adhesive but cover handed over after posted time, thus "TOO-LATE G.P.O." marking applied; cover was assessed as overweight, the correct rate being 6d. plus 2d. Late Fee, accordingly handstamped "INSUFFICIENTLY / STAMPED", "2" in manuscript at upper left denoting second weight class, the cover therefore short 3d. postage and 3d. penalty, but 2d. credit applied for the unused Late Fee service, thus manuscript "4" (pence) or "20" (cents) due notations, reverse with Amsterdam arrival cds (7 Sept), a fascinating cover.
