(Route 6003) Steamer Cuba. Red oval handstamp on blue folded letter datelined "Vicksburg July 25, 1851" from Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., endorsed "Cuba" at lower left, entered mails "New Orleans La. Jul 27" cds and matching "Way 6" rating handstamp, fresh and Very Fine.
Milgram No. 320; Estimate $300 - 400.

The way fee was applied as the "Cuba" was running on Route 4829 from St. Louis to New Orleans and the letter was picked up on the vessel's course.

Steamer Louis D'Or. Neat oval handstamp cancels 3¢ red Nesbitt buff entire from Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., endorsed "per Louis D'Or", usual filing hole; accompanied by Steamer Louis D'Or, Feb. 2nd 1861 passenger fare receipt for Henry Marston and Negroes from Port Hudson probably to New Orleans, this was 24 days after Secession of Mississippi from the Union, a Very Fine pair.
Milgram No. 812; Estimate $400 - 600.

Marston owned plantations on the Mississippi River and the Clinton Bank. A native of Massachusetts and opposed to slavery, he may have been trying to help escaped slaves. The "Louis D'Or" was a 343 ton steamboat built in 1860.

(Route 8165) U.S. Mail Saturday Evening Packet Str. Natchez. Clear strike of route agent cds on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Rosedale La., red "Red River Landing, La. Nov 16" cds with day in manuscript, carried by the Natchez running Route 8165 from Vicksburg to New Orleans, probably landed at Brulee Landing to be carried on the post road west to Rosedale, 1858 docketing at left, F.-V.F.

This circular marking is actually a route agent's postmark rather than a typical vessel-named advertising marking. Note the "Route 8165" below the name of the vessel. This is the sixth "Natchez", built at Cincinnati in 1854. Leathers received his first mail contract for this boat together with two other boats. This was an unusual letter to be both picked up and dropped off on the course of a contract steamboat route.

The "Natchez No. 2" was owned by Thomas Leathers and was possibly running Route 6003 contracted by the single trip at 2¢ a letter carried.

The Vicksburg of 572 tons was built at New Albany in 1861 as the Louisville. She served as a Union gunboat and sold to Daniel T. Head in 1865 and renamed Vicksburg. Ran the Vicksburg to New Orleans trade during the cotton seasons and burnt in July 1869.

(Civil War Transport) "On Steamboat Meteor, Jan. 8th 1862". Datelined on patriotic lettersheet showing sitting liberty in red design, accompanied by original yellow cover with blue patriotic Eagle with rays design endorsed "Army Letter, Maj. W. Warner, 76th Oh" addressed to Hanover OH., probably carried by steamboat from Vicksburg area to Memphis, entered mails with "Memphis Ten Feb 6 1862" cds and matching "Due 3" rating handstamp and transferred to steamboat to Cairo and then Cincinnati; edge wear and reduced at right, F.-V.F.

Many of the Mississippi mail boats were contracted to carry troops during the Civil War. The Meteor carried troops to the siege of Vicksburg in January 1862 and to the landings at Bledsoe's and Hamblin's Landings, Arkansas in October of that year.

Patriotic letter sheet contained within envelope reading : "Dear Uncle, I had not written to you for some in consequence of being where the mails did not reach us. We have been down to Vicksburg on a little excursion but before going any further I will give you a little account of the trip, I do not remember the dates but never mind. We left Helena and proceeded down the Mississippi when we arrived at the mouth of the Yazoo we started up the river having gone up that river about fifteen miles we disembarked but had not gone more than a mile before we came in sight of the rebels earthworks here we stopped and waited until the rest of troops disembarked when Gen. Frank P. Blairs' brigade had landed and it marched about a mile towards Vicksburg and was soon engaged hotley with the rebels and night only ended the engagement…".
