A colorful transatlantic franking on a fine "Trans-Continental Hotel" cover, sent during the Centennial Exposition and passing through New York on 4 July 1876

1871 (Aug) cover from Boston to Rev. Bissel in Ahmednuggur, India, paying 44c with pair of 10c brown & single 24c, red "London Paid 28 Aug. 71" transit, also "36/2" in crayon (indicating British credit) on front, oval "Sea Post Office" and red "Ahmednuggur Camp PO." arrival pmks on back, also with some inked computations (which could indicate why the Reverend saved them; he may have used them for record keeping in lieu of scarce paper. When he returned to the U.S., he brought his records with him. Rev. Lemuel Bissell, was a missionary in India from 1851 to 1891. The envelopes to Rev. Bissell came on the philatelic market in the spring of 1912 in a sale to J. Murray Bartels, a well known stamp dealer in New York City) -
