1915-18 Covers and cards (22) and a front with censor cachets naming the ship including the Kent (2, one sent 11 days after the sinking of the "Dresden"), Powerful (2), Milne, Maid of Honour (front, with boxed "SHIP LETTER" cancel), Centurian (2), Foxhound (2), Jupiter, Topaze, Sapphire, Sabrina, Calista, Acacia, Hardinge, T308, Colossus, Benbow, etc., also an unnamed censor cachet from the "Kent" and manuscript "Passed by Censor" alongside the cachet "H.M.X.V. No 1" of the Liverpool pilot boat S.S "Alfred H. Read", various cancels. A good lot. (25).

Malta. 1831 Entire letter from Malta to England headed "From Thomas Carttin Seaman H.M Ship Melville" and countersigned with "H.M.S Melville Malta, July 7th 1831" above the Officers signature, prepaid at the 1d rate, a 1d coin having been sown to the letter, the circle of holes clearly visible at the left. The 1d coin presumably removed and kept by the Falmouth Post Office, who marked the letter "P1" and applied their backstamp. H.M.S Melville was sent to guard Graham Island, formed by an underground volcano off Sicily in 1831, as part of Britain’s sovereignty claims; however the island disappeared under the sea by the end of 1831. A scarce concession rate letter showing payment by coin sown to the letter. Photo on Page 68.

1702 (Apr 27) Letter signed by Earl Pembroke, Lord High Admiral, sent to Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell at the Nore, informing him that four Scottish ships in the River Thames had their crews impressed and so were unable to proceed on their voyage to Scotland; Shovell was ordered to have all the impressed men returned to their ships and to give orders that in future no Scottish men are to be impressed from any ship belonging to the nation of Scotland. A fascinating document.

A fine study on album pages including unusual boxed handstamps (2, one with a Queenstown skeleton), various "John Bull" loose type handstamps and handstamps used to cancel stamps, late 1927 use with 1d tied by Paquebot Liverpool c.d.s, a very scarce use on a Parcel Post label, various censors including circular "PASSED / H.M.S KENT / CENSOR" and cachets including "BRITISH MISSION / BELGIAN H.Q".
