Surcharged at the Government Printing Office, Suva 1891 (March 1): ½ d. on 1 d. dull blue, perf. 10, twelve examples including four pairs used on 1892 local cover to Basil H. Thompson in Suva, all cancelled by "Suva / Fiji" circular datestamps (Nov 1) in black. A few imperfections but a charming and scarce usage Gi = £ 960 off cover.

Note: Sir Basil Home Thomson, KCB (1861–1939) was a British Colonial administrator and prison governor, who was Head of Metropolitan Police CID during World War I. This gave him a key role in arresting wartime spies, and he was closely involved in the prosecution of Mata Hari, Sir Roger Casement amongst others. He arrived in Suva in 1884 to assist the Governor as a stipendary magistrate and later as Commissioner of Native Lands. Whilst there he learnt both the Fijian and the Tongan languages.

Typeset at "The Fiji Times" Office, Levuka 1870: 1 d. black on rose thin quadrillé paper, an unused example, position 14 on the composite sheet of 24 subjects, large margins all round and of good colour for this stamp, merest hint of thin spot from previous hinge under first "E" of EXPRESS, partial gum, fresh and very fine for this rarity. Cert. (2021) Gi = £4'500.

On paper lithographed "VR" 1877 (Jan 5): 1 d. deep blue on horizontally laid paper, an unused horizontal strip of three, marginal at right, variety "Imperforate between Vertically", of lovely rich colour, superb, large part og. A delightful and rare multiple Gi = £ 700++.

1891/98: Canoe 1 d. black, perf. 11 x 11¾, a used example example of this rare stamp, cancelled 'par complaisance' with 1901 cds in black. Rare nevertheless. Cert. BPA (2007) Gi = £ 1'500.

A fine example of an extremely rare stamp. Cert. (2021) Gi = £ 5'500.

On paper lithographed "VR" 1877 (Jan 5): 6 d. pale rose on laid paper, a used example on horizontally laid paper, on 1879 cover to Marcus Hamilton in Tonga, tied by sunburst cancellation with "Levuka / Fiji" circular datestamp at left (July 16). Philatelic notation below "VR over CR" in manuscript with date, small imperfections and flap missing but a very scarce cover.

Note: Marcus Hamilton took early photographs of Tonga including famous photographs of the Tongan Royal Family, most of which now reside in the British Museum.

1915/19: "WAR STAMP" 1 d. bright scarlet from Plate 5, an unused horizontal pair, marginal from right of sheet, right hand stamp variety "Overprint Omitted", hinged for protection, fresh and very fine, large part og. Extremely rare Gi = £ 5'500.
Provenance: Harmers, London, 8 July 1999, lot 937.
Note: Just 10 examples of this error can exist. The interpanneau panes of 60 were surcharged in Suva at the same time. On one sheet from Plate 5, the overprint was shifted to the left, leaving one "WAR STAMP" overprint in the left margin, stamp six showing "WAR S" and stamp 12 with "WAR STAMP" entirely omitted. Only three complete interpanneau strips are still 'in situ' in their original strips of twelve, one in the "Besançon" Collection, one ex the Peter Robertson collection from the base of sheet with Plate Number 5 (lot 203) and the top horizontal row of the sheet is housed in the collection of Her Majesty King Charles III.
