Auction #23 Hong Kong, 1891 (Jan. 22), 7¢ on 10¢ surcharge issue on red band cover from Hong Kong to Batavia, an interesting and highly unusual cover, franked on reverse by 7¢ on 10¢ Hong Kong surcharge, tied by "B62" killer with matching "Hong Kong/A/JA 22/91" c.d.s.; reverse also shows large red "BATAVIA" handstamp; front of cover shows "N-I Agent Singapore 27/1/1891" handstamp with Batavia Jan 30, 1891 receiver, Fine to Very Fine, rare and choice. Estimate HK$ 3,000 - 4,000 The 7¢ rate was to Hong Kong only, but during January to March 1891, the Hong Kong G.P.O. mistakenly accepted the rate also to U.P.U. countries - in this case, to the colony of a U.P.U. country.
