Battle of Algiers. 1816 (Aug 29) Entire letter from Robert Gordon written on the "Queen Charlotte" off Algiers, to his father in London with light red "BRIXHAM / SHIP LETTER" (Rob. S4, first recorded year of use), charged 3/2. The letter comprises an exceptional and detailed description of the battle, including "they opened their fire which was immediately returned by the whole fleet in such a manner as astonished them & so heavy and well directed was our fire that we soon drove them out of their works on that part of the Mole exposed to our fire. We then hauled round for our broadside to bear on the town & continued a most furious cannonade till near 12 o’clock when one of seven frigates which we had set fire to, very nearly drifted on board us, which had she done we must inevitably have been burnt, but miraculously at that moment a breeze sprang up which enabled us to get out of her way & drift her in again. We then, having silenced the batteries & destroyed part of the town, warped out again. We then found our rigging much cut up & 8 men only killed and 126 wounded .... The Consul whom they detained has just been on board, he describes the slaughter in town as dreadful, that at least 1500 have been killed & many thousands wounded .... The Impregnable, not having been able to take her station close enough, has suffered severely, about 50 killed & 200 wounded ...". Also a superb handpainted map of the Battle, painted by Gordon and sent to his mother in Ledbury, hand carried to England and posted as a Free letter in London, franked by Sir B. Martin. The British freed 3,000 captured Europeans and forced the Dey of Algiers to abolish Christian slavery and promise to end piracy. A remarkable pair. (2). Photo on Page 67.

Malta. 1831 Entire letter from Malta to England headed "From Thomas Carttin Seaman H.M Ship Melville" and countersigned with "H.M.S Melville Malta, July 7th 1831" above the Officers signature, prepaid at the 1d rate, a 1d coin having been sown to the letter, the circle of holes clearly visible at the left. The 1d coin presumably removed and kept by the Falmouth Post Office, who marked the letter "P1" and applied their backstamp. H.M.S Melville was sent to guard Graham Island, formed by an underground volcano off Sicily in 1831, as part of Britain’s sovereignty claims; however the island disappeared under the sea by the end of 1831. A scarce concession rate letter showing payment by coin sown to the letter. Photo on Page 68.
