May 6" cds addressed to his father Purser Samuel P. Todd at the U.S. Navy Yard in Philadelphia Pa., the letter is written just before the first battles of the war, accompanied by second letter from correspondence datelined "Off Brazos de Santiago, May 13th 1846"that reports in great detail the results of the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de Palma, which were American victories that opened the war, he includes a hand drawn plan showing the second battle; some fold separations on letters, F.-V.F., An exceptional Mexican War letter with great battle details.
Estimate; $400 - 600.

The May 13th letter reads in part, "The news from the Army is of the most cheering kind. Genl. Taylor with the forces under his command had two general engagements with the Mexicans, both of which our troops have been victorious…On the 3rd Genl Taylor with two thousand men marched for Point Isabell for the purpose of protecting his supplies, which had been left at that place. On his return to the camp, he was attacked by the whole of the enemy numbering about seven thousand. The battle commenced at 3 o-clock PM and lasted until dark when the armies were separated. In the morning, the Mexicans declined battle. The loss of the enemy in killed, wounded and prisoners is estimated at five hundred, that of the Americans at forty.Among the killed is Major Brown…Maj. Ringgold was wounded and has since died, Capt. Page was also badly wounded and is not expected to survive. The next day…General T. succeeded in bringing the enemy to battle. A general engagement ensued in which the Mexicans were totally routed, having sustained a loss of killed, wounded and prisoners of one thousand. Several field officers and one general were taken. The loss of our force in killed, wounded amounted to 60. The Mexicans sustained a total defeat, all of them fled from the field leaving all of the artillery munitions of war, baggage and even private property… Genl Taylor's force amounted to only 1500…that of the Mexicans 6000. Genl Vallejo, who was taken prisoner was perfectly surprised that so small a forced defeated the best troops in their army. Genl Arista had proposed an armistice but it has not been accepted…".
