lot # 5621 - Portugal
Cape Verde 1881/85: Crown 10 r. green, perf. 12½ used with 40 r. yellow, a marginal imperforate example, on 1885 single rate cover to Lisbon endorsed "pelo "Cabo Verde", tied by oval framed "CORREIO DE S. VICENTE / CABO VERDE" datestamp in black (May 4). Reverse with Lisbon arrival datestamp (May 10) in black. The cover with trivial ageing at the top of the 40 r. and file folds at left and central file fold well away from the adhesives but a great rarity of the Colonial Crown issues - one of just two covers known bearing the Imperforate 40 reis on letter. Signed R. Calves Scott 13a+16.
Provenance: Collection Gonzales Garcia & Luis de Brito de Frazao.
