Lot 1628 - g.b postal history machines - Argyll Etkin Ltd Worldwide Stamps and Postal History

1912 (Jan 29) Picture postcard to France with red "LONDON E.C / 1d POSTAGE PAID" applied by the experimental Wilkinson 1d in the Slot machine with the London E.C 172 c.d.s (2.15PM), the machine mark only valid on internal mail, a 1d stamp therefore added and tied by London E.C 161 c.d.s (2.30PM). The message in French explains the need for a stamp, suggesting the overseas address was noted at the time of posting and the sender informed and asked to purchase a stamp. An unusual first day of use of this machine, very few stamped examples addressed abroad recorded. Photo on Page 235.
