lot # 265 - China 1897 new currency surcharges
China, 1897 Small Surcharge on Dowager 1st printing 2c. on 2ca. green, variety surcharge double, Type B, deep colour, well centred, cancelled by complete Chefoo pakua in brown. A rarity with only approximately 30 examples surviving from the two sheets produced. Experts & Consultants certificate (2006). Chan 39c.

There is believed to have been two double panes of forty produced with the variety surcharge double. The type A surcharge is known mostly mint with a few examples cancelled by "Customs/Shanghai" double-ring d.s., whereas most of the type B stamps are cancelled by Chefoo pakua. The rarer of the two types is type B, of which less than ten examples have been recorded.
