lot # 959 - betschuanaland
1889 (March): "Protectorate / Fourpence" surcharge in black on GB ½ d. vermilion, a used example, variety "ourpence" omitted (Row 9, stamp 2), cancelled by numeral obliterator in black, probably "676" of Palachwe or "679" of Tati but third figure unclear, however the cancellation fortunately leaves the remaining "F" of "Fourpence" clear. Slightest soiling at upper left but an extraordinary and very rare stamp with no example in the Inglefield-Watson collection (2007), and unpriced in used condition. Cert. BPA (2003) Scott 68c/Gi = £ 10'000 for unused - unpriced used.
Provenance: Harmers, London, 14 Oct 2003, lot 550.
