Hong Kong, 1871 (9 June) entire letter from Hong Kong to New York "via Brindisi" bearing CC watermark 18c. lilac, 2c. and 48c. cancelled "B62" with the 18c. also tied by "London/Paid" transit (22.7) and New York packet arrival c.d.s. (both in red), handstruck "2/Cents" accountancy in red adjacent, with "Hong Kong/C" origin c.d.s. and "Vogel, Hagedorn & Co." sender's h.s. on reverse, rated "2/8" and "2", central vertical filing fold (away from adhesives), a little edge splitting at upper right, a delightful and colourful very rare cover with the watermarked 18c. (double 34c. rate to U.S.A. via Brindisi, with the Marseille route closed at this time because of the Franco-Prussian War). Ex George E. Burghard, Christopher D'Almada. S.G. 8a, 13, 17a.
