lot # 4185 - grossbritannien
Crimean War 1855 (Aug 19): Cover with full contents written on board the Hospital Ship "Poitiers" off Scutari, Constantinople to Bath, England endorsed "From the British Army in the East", the entire placed in the French Post Office by the Forwarding Agent "STEPHEN DEMARTINO / SHIP BROKER / CONSTANTINOPLE" with blue cachet at left and "Constantinople / Turquie" cds (Aug 20) in black somewhat overlapped by "Bath" cds of arrival (Aug 29) where charged "1/-" to pay - thus the cost of this method was 9d. more expensive than through the British Field Post Office. Interesting contents from G.A. Wilkinson of the 62nd Regiment: "We left Balaclava on Sunday last with 92 invalids on board...we were towed across the Black Sea by the "Ottawa" steamer...". A fine and very rare entire.
Provenance: Collection Hugh Wood.
