Lot 2879 - europe ddsg - Corinphila Auction AG Auction 309-320 - Europe & Overseas - Day 5DDSG / DSNC 1864: Austrian Arms 15 s. brown, perf. 9½ used on 1865 entire letter from Oreava to Constantinople tied by rare Roman dated "OREAVA / 17 / VIII" circular datestamp in blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 909). Reverse with Rustchuk transit (Aug 22) and Austrian P.O. in Constantinople arrival (Aug 23). Superb strike and of great rarity - this adhesive issue was not sold at Oreava and this cover bears the earliest recorded strike of this rare marking. An exhibition item for the connoisseur. The adhesive crossed by file fold but one of just two covers recorded from Nicopoli bearing this stamp, the other also being from this correspondence (ex Meyer collection). This datestamp was most probably a book-keeping cancellation applied to receipts rather than a postal one. The 10 kr. red is rare on cover from Lom Palanka with Tchilinghiran & Stephen recording just one cover. Illustrated in Dr. G. Popov "Die Österreichische Levantepost in Bulgarien" on page 29 and mentioned on page 513 and illustrated on page 514 in Tchilinghirian & Stephen and in Edition D'Or volume XVIII on page 70.The sole recorded usage of the datestamp as a canceller on letter.
