Turkish Admiralty Steamship Co. 1860: Admiralty carmine adhesive with huge margins on three sides and just touched on the oval at left, manusctipr rated "3/2" piastres (in error for 3½) with slight ink spot at left alongside the adhesive, used on 22 June 1860 entire letter from Constantinople to Brousse with fine strike of Anchor "PP" at left in black. File folds away from the adhesive, a rare franking. Signed Calves. Cert. Nakri (2024) Mi = € 10'000.

1863: 20 pa. black on thin yellow paper, a sheet marginal example, used with 2 pi. black on thin blued paper and 5 pi. black on rose, all with good margins for the issue, on cover from Kayseri to Istanbul tied by dotted 'battal' handstamps in black. The cover carried at 4 dirhems weight over a 149 route hour journey = 7½ piastres; with slight part of envelope at left but with full original contents. A rare and most appealing first issue franking. Cert. Nakri (2024).

Greek Post Office in Smirna 1920: Stampless Miltary cover to Panderma (Bandirma), Turkey struck with 'Field Post Office / 911' despatch cds (Sept 16) in black with strikes on obverse and reverse of circular "COMMISARIAT DIVISION / SMYRNA" in violet and reverse countersigned by the sender (a Lieutenant). Scarce and most unusual.

Greek Post Office in Smirna 1919 (May 18): Stampless cover from newly occupied Smirna to Metelino showing framed "EΛΛ. TAXYΔP. YΠHEΣIΛ / EN / ΣMYPNH / ATEΛEΣ" handstamp in black and reverse with Metelino arrival cds (May 18). An extremely rare cover.

Note: The Greek invasion was on 15th May 1919, a Greek Field Post Office was opened on the same day. The Civil Post Office did not open until 20th May 1919. For 5 days Greek civilians and businesses were able to send letters free via the Military Post, letters received the handstamp shown above.

Incoming Mail to Smirna 1846/1949: Covers/cards (23) with 1846 entire locally carried with "BRITISH CONSULATE / SMYRNA" Arms handstamp on reverse, cover from Aleppo to Izmir struck with negative seal on despatch, rare 1859 cover with "P/Anchor/P" handstamp and "Porto Piastre 6½" rate label, 1860 cover from Southampton to Smyrna franked 6 d. lilac, 1871 cover from Lyon franked France 1867 20 c. blue (2) underpaid and charged "6" décimes due, 1874 cover with Italy 1863 40 c. red with superb "Lloyd Agenzie / Smirne" displaying well on flap, 1882 cover "via Pireo" with Austrian Levant 10 soldi blue tied SALONICCO cds, 1903 card from Italy underpaid at 5 c. and taxed with Austria 20 pa. green Postage Due, 1904 card from China with 4 c. brown to Vathy, Samos via Suez and Smyrne, 1908 card from Warsaw with ROPiT Office arrival cds in violet, and registered 1925 Parcel Card from Hungary etc. A fine lot.

British Post Office in Smirna 1912: 12 pi. on 2 s. 6 d. dull greyish purple, a fine used example with sheet magin at base, used on 1913 registered cover from Smirna to Paris tied by oval framed "REGISTERED / SMYRNA" datestamp (April 5) in black. Repeated strike on reverse of an attractive cover.

Italian Military Post Office in Smirna 1922 (Oct 4): Cover from Italian Military P.O. in Smirna to Galata, Constantinople franked by Italy 40 c. brown vertical pair (single rate of Jan 1, 1922) tied by rare usage of three line "R, POSTE / ITALIANE / -SMIRNE-" handstamp in violet with additional information strike at above right and a further impression on reverse alongside Italian P.O. in Constantinople arrival cds (Oct 4). An exceptional and rare cover with this marking.
Provenance: Collection "Cihangir" (Herry Schaefer), Corinphila sale, Nov 2000, lot 3192.
Note: After the Italian Military P.O. was burnt down in the fires of 14th September 1922 which engulfed the Armenian and Greek areas of Smirna, the previous cancellations were lost to the flames. The Office re-opened on 26th September using this cancellation as an emergency measure.
