lot # 137 - Greece - Large Hermes Head 1862/67 consecutive athens printings
KYDONIAE to SYROS, July 27 1867. AN excellent example of still applying, in error, the November 20, 1836 Decree (Julian Calendar), where among other articles the overseas postage of 10l. was required for letters to or from the islands in addition to the basic mail rate of 20l. for the mainland, and a 10l. fee for the in-town distribution. The regular postage was paid at the post office of Kydoniae and the handstamp "ΕΠΛΗΡΩΘΗ" was placed indicating the postage had been paid. The letter arriving in Syros received the two 10l s for the rates above. Notice the stamps and the circular postmark of Syros are over the handstamp.
