lot # 6479 - Hong Kong issued stamps
Hong Kong, 1891 Jubilee 2c. carmine, variety overprint shifted downwards, showing the nicked "B" [3], cancelled by part "Hong Kong/B" c.d.s., small thin and few blunted perfs. at left, a very nice example of this extremely rare and important Jubilee variety. S.G. 51 var.
Estimate HK$ 50,000 - 60,000
Provenance: Christopher D'Almada.
It is believed that only a single setting of 12 was overprinted with this error. The example illustrated in the Gurevitch treatise (from the Ishikawa collection and which is damaged) also shows a postal c.d.s. (in that case with an 1893 date). The error should not be confused with the similar variety overprint shifted upwards, examples of which show the 22 Jan. c.t.o. c.d.s. and which would tend to have a much higher survival rate than a variety that was postally used.
