lot # 6301 - Hong Kong early mail
Hong Kong, Anglo-French Accountancy Marks : 1865 (16? Dec.) entire from Yokohama to Amsterdam (13.2.66) "Via Marseille" (11.2) and Hong Kong (23.12) showing very fine "GB/1F26c" accountancy h.s. in grey with two stops under the "F" (and no stop under the "c"), with "Carst, Lels & Co./Kanagawa (Japan)" sender's h.s. adjacent and "Hong Kong/C" transit c.d.s. in grey on reverse, rated "165", very fine, very rare with accountancy mark not previously known on Hong Kong mail. This particular type of the accountancy handstamp is unrecorded by both Webb and Proud, although the figure for this accountancy mark in Salles corresponds to this handstamp. The normally-encountered handstamp on Hong Kong mail for this charge shows no stop under the "F" and a stop under the "c". Carried from Japan on the private ship Child of the Ocean, which arrived 22 Dec. in Hong Kong, and then on P&O Ottawa that left Hong Kong 1 Jan. 1866, as it could not be posted from Hong Kong on the earlier French ship Tigre because the letter was not specifically endorsed for French Mail (as required by Hong Kong regulations). Ex Christopher D'Almada.
Estimate HK$ 15,000 - 20,000
