After a British victory at Fatehabad on April 2, 1879, Lieutenant General Sir Samuel Browne's forces occupied Gandamak, and Yakub Khan decided to negotiate with the British. As known the main British negotiator was Major Cavagnari, who was eventually appointed British Envoy to Kabul, where he was massacred on September 3, 1879, and an atrocity that sparked the renewal of hostilities.
