CEYLON - U.S., 1857 (Aug 31), cover from Colombo to San Francisco, 4d. rate to California, entire (addressee's name excised and replaced), marked "p steamer via China", bearing 1d. blue (4, all cut-into on one side) tied by neat oval bars, showing rare on a franked cover "BRITISH PACKET/PAID/POSTAGE" circular handstamp. Reverse shows "COLOMBO / STEAMER LETTER" and Hong Kong datestamps. A very rare rate being the 4d, rate to a destination beyond and via a British Colony, and not passing through London. This cover went by P.O. ship "ADEN" to Hong Kong and American clipper ship "Starr King" to San Francisco. Fault described in certificate does not detract from rarity, ex Obre Sanders, B.P.A. certificate (2000). SG 2a.
Est. 1 500 - 2 000 CHF
