Angora - Australian Submarine A.E.2. 1917 Stampless cover to England endorsed "8284 P. Fawns E.R.A, late Submarine A.E.2, British Prisoner of War, Angora, Turkey" with a boxed censor cachet and London F.S Paid machine. The submarine A.E.2 was sent to Gallipoli where it sank a Turkish gunboat and penetrated into the Sea of Marmora; five days later it was forced to surface by mechanical failure and was scuttled after being attacked by a Turkish torpedo boat, the 34 crew all surviving. A scarce cover from an Australian submariner P.O.W in Turkey, just 210 Australians being captured by the Turks. Photo on Page 94.
