lot # 28 - antarctica 1908-09 shackleton expedition
1907 (Dec 21) Piece headed "P.O. No. 264 / MEMO." bearing proof impressions of the "BRIT. ANTARCTIC EXPD / N.Z" c.d.s and "BRIT. ANT. EXP. / (crown)" intaglio mailbag seal, applied on the day the two handstamps were manufactured. One similar piece is known and is illustrated in "New Zealand Antarctic Postal History to 1941" by R. Duns. A rare item; the c.d.s was not used on philatelic mail until 1st January 1908 (and expedition mail on Jan. 15th) whilst the mailbag seal is only known on these two 21 Dec. pieces.
