German East Africa. 1891 (June 2) Cover addressed to "Major von Wissmann, Kaiserlischer Reichscommissar fur Ost Afrika, Bagamoyo", readdressed to Germany franked with Germany 20pf tied by "BAGAMOYO" c.d.s, backstamped at the German P.O at Zanzibar (June 8) and in Germany. Herman von Wissmann was a soldier and African explorer who quelled an Arab rebellion in 1888 and took Bagamoyo in 1889; he was Imperial Commissioner in GEA from 1888 to 1891 and Governor in 1895-96. A scarce early cover from Bagamoyo just eight months after the Post Office opened. Photo on Page 157.
