(Routes 4814 & 8812) Steamer War Eagle. Red oval handstamp on folded wrapper addressed to New Orleans La., carried on the War Eagle to St. Louis arriving with red "St. Louis Mo. Jul 21" cds and manuscript "SB 2" rating updated to "10" cents; fault in address, F.-V.F.
Milgram No. 1426; Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

The "War Eagle" of 155 tons was built at Cincinnati in 1845 for Capt. Daniel Smith Harris who was also her Master. Harris's brother Scribe Harris acted as the vessels Engineer. The addressee was the Fourth Bishop of New Orleans, Monsignor Antoine Blanc (1792-1860) who became the First Archbishop there in 1850.

Between July 1846 and June 1850, Route 4814 Keokuk to St. Louis was contracted at $7.50 per round trip. Letters arriving at the St. Louis office for transfer onto Route 4813 to New Orleans where bagged at St. Louis.
