Letter to 1849 Double Eagle Owner: 1847, 5¢ red brown, good to large margins all around, probably sheet margin at left, extremely fine, tied by blue PHILADELPHIA MAR 31 5 c.d.s. to 1849 folded letter bearing matching c.d.s. to Washington D.C. (Scott 1).

The letter is addressed to lawyer William M. Meredith who had just become Sec. of the Treasury (under Taylor) 3 weeks earlier. The letter acknowledges Mr. Meredith declining a case because of his position. Historically Sec. Meredith received one of only two 1849 Double Eagles, as Secretary; it was auctioned as part of his estate and disappeared. History accompanies.
