General Townsend. 1915 Covers to Lady Peek or Captain Sir Wilfred Peek in Devon, both endorsed from "Charles Townsend, Major General, Comdng 6th Division, Expeditionary Force D" with datestamps of "BUSRAH" (May 1) or Indian F.P.O 55 (Oct 7), circular "PASSED / D / CENSOR". Townsend commanded the forces at Kut, surrendering in April 1916 after a siege of 144 days. (See lot 550). (2). Photo on Page 85.
