lot # 115 - antarctica 1921-22 shackleton-rowett expedition
1922 (May 25) Cover to "Professor Sims, Union Observatory, Johannesburg, South Africa" with G.B. 2/6 tied by boxed "GOUGH / ISLAND" and the "S-R. ANTARCTIC / EXPEDITION 1921" c.d.s, applied whilst the "Quest" was at Tristan da Cunha. Only five or six covers are believed to exist with any of the three boxed cancels used by the expedition; this cover especially scarce with the 2/6 value of which just 40 stamps were supplied to the exhibition. A little light staining, otherwise fine, an important exhibition item. Photo included on Inside Back Cover.
Suggested price: £ 4,000-5,000
