G.P.O Poster No. 13 "On the Exemptions granted to Seamen in the Navy, and Soldiers in the Army, in respect of the Postage of their Letters" listing the regulations and method of address for letters sent at the 1d concession rate to or from soldiers or sailors, and the penalties for contravening the regulations. The upper edge a little soiled and with a tear, otherwise fine, a scarce and interesting early Post Office Notice.

1811 Entire letter paid at the 1d soldiers rate from Haddington to Darlington, headed "William Layton Private Durham Militia" and countersigned, the contents comprising a partly printed certificate stating that William Layton enrolled in the Durham Militia as a substitute for John Proctor in 1803. Unusual.

1808 Entire letter from an illiterate soldier at Eastbourne Barracks (signed with a cross) to Olney prepaid at the 1d concession rate, endorsed "Jn Drase Private, Kings Own Militia" and countersigned, with an Eastbourne mileage mark and London Paid datestamp.

Lot #342 - forces mail 1d concession rates
1812 Entire letter prepaid at the 1d concession rate from Deal to Aberdeen with a Deal 74 mileage mark and London Paid datestamp, the reverse endorsed "Robert Umphray Seaman H.M.S Warrior at the Downs January 28 1812" and countersigned. Also 1798 entire letter written by an Officer on the "Leopard" at Spithead with a Portsmouth handstamp. (2).
