Tonto A.T., 9/24/89 (Gila). Manuscript postmark (Meyer 4, rarity 7) on cover to San Bernardino, Cal., franked with manuscript canceled 2¢ Banknote, accompanied by 1883 letter from correspondence prior to the formation of the Tonto post office…If you send me some money, send it to Phoenix and write to me and I will go and get it. There is no Post Office here all of my letters come by chance.; cover stain and reduction at left, F.-V.F., a scarce manuscript postmark usage from Tonto.

The post office at Tonto was established on the Howell Ranch at the foot of a trail called Jumpoff. The post office opened February 20, 1884 and closed June 6, 1902, with James B. Watkins as its postmaster.
