UNITED STATES - Switzerland, 1869, cover, franked with "F" grill version of the 10 cent green Washington, underpaying the 15 cent single weight letter rate to Switzerland via the closed mails through England. Stamp tied by cork killer, with NEW YORK / BR.TRANSIT departure on reverse. Front shows INSUFFICIENTLY PAID handstamp with manuscript "5" cent deficiency, VIA OSTENDE handstamp, plus manuscript "45" centime postage due. Reverse bears ARGAU Swiss transit plus ZURZACH arrival c.d.s. A very unusual insufficiently prepaid letter under the US-Swiss Convention, showing scarce use of the 10 cent grilled stamp. Scott 96.
