Interasia’s November 1-4 auction of China, Hong Kong and Asian stamps and postal history will take place at the Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay in Hong Kong. The four day, 4,500-lot sale includes another outstanding offering of China and Hong Kong stamps and postal history, with important Ching Dynasty and Republic, substantial postal history, and large offerings of both People’s Republic and Liberated Areas. Hong Kong and Treaty Ports alone comprises over 650 lots and includes a mint Q.V. 96c. olive-bistre.
November 1 Session (lots 1-1038) consists of China Ching Dynasty and Republic issues, as well as Chinese Provinces, Manchukuo and Japanese Occupation of China. Among the stamps, highlights include a lovely 1878(c.) Elephant essay, important Dowager and Dowager surcharge varieties, 1897 Red Revenue Small 2c. inverted surcharge mint block of four, 1c. reconstructed mint sheet of 100 (from four positional panes) and $5 inverted surcharge mint, and Provisional Neutrality overprints. The postal history includes an 1873 cover from the Vapereau correspondence with the “Customs House/Shanghai/Paid” dater, a very rare “Customs/Tamsuy” cover, a select offering of Small Dragon covers, and a new find of classic correspondence to Reverend J.N. Hayes.
November 3 Session (lots 4261-5145 from this catalogue) includes China Postal Stationery and Covers, Chinese Local Posts, Taiwan, Tibet, Mongolia, Macau and other Asia.
November 4 Session (lots 6001-6281 from this catalogue) comprises the Dr. Bruce J. Lewin “U.S. Influence in China 1810-1948”, a study of mail to and from the U.S. and China, and Foreign Post Offices in China. Dr. Lewin’s collection includes a large offering of early mail to and from the Treaty Ports, an array of U.S. Agencies in Shanghai and Tientsin covers, with rare registration labels and Trans-Mississippi issue frankings, Customs Post and Imperial China usages, and outstanding U.S./Chinese Local Post combination covers.
