War of the Grand Alliance. 1696 (Feb 7) - 1797 (June 4) Entire letters charged 8d to London all with Bishop Marks, one inscribed "fro Rotterdam" in another hand. The letters comprise: Ghent, 7 Feb 1696 - ‘Mr Hill has received orders from the King and States of Holland to break the Cartell with the French unless they return some French Officers whom they took at sea going for England and have sent to the Gallies’; Camp at Bass Waver, 8 June 1696 - ‘Yesterday I came here with three Battalions of Guards from the Camp near Ghent and find the army here to be now composed of eighty one Regiments of Foot and one hundred and fifty six squadrons of Horse & Dragoons making in all about 7000 men. The Duke of Wirtenberg lyes at Dermond with 22 Rgts of Foot and the Prince of Vaudemont at the Canall of Bridges’; Camp near Brussells, 4 May 1797 - ‘as soon as (the English Horse and Dragoons) arrive the whole will march to Waterloo where a magazine of forrage is laid up’; Camp at Bois Seignour Isaac, 12 May - ‘the Siege of Ath goes on and the enemy have secured the passes from Mons to the Skeld’; Camp at Bois Seignour Isaac, 5 May - news from a Drummer sent to Mons for some soldiers that were taken prisoner; Camp at Promelles, 4 June - news of troop locations, the surrender of Ath and siege of Barcelonias by the French. An interesting correspondence. (6).
