Duke of Wellington. 1801 (Aug 10) Stampless entire letter written and signed by Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington) whilst Governor of Seringapatam. Addressed to "J.H. Piele Esq., Osuttah" and signed "Arthur Wellesley", with a superb oval framed "POSTFREE / SERINGAPATAM" (Hammond Giles type 2, listed as reported but not seen); the letter concerns payments to Shukur Oolla Khan. A fine and rare letter written between the third Mysore War of 1799 when Tippo Sultan was killed and Seringapatam captured by the British, and the Second Mahratta War. Photo on Page 161.
