This auction offers strong representation of Australia & Colonies, strong British Empire material of all areas & periods, as well as General Foreign including small and large collections. There are almost 300 lots of Australian Collections (Lots 70-314) and well over 350 lots of World collections (Lots 315-679).
Following on there are almost 1100 lots of Australia which consist of singles, sets and covers including Australian colonies (Lots 722-1739). The Australian lots cover all periods, from the Kangaroo issues up to Decimal and contains numerous number of mint & used £1 & £2 top values - this includes a First Watermark £2 Black & rose. Superb fresh MLH, unusually W/C. SG 16 cat £6500+. ACSC 55A cat $10,000+, while retail for such w/c would be $15,000+. Nicest example (Lot 772). There is almost 1,200 lots of World stamps, covers and single country collections (Lots 1740-3864) with the British Empire well represented, highlighted by 1884 1882-1901 " IR OFFICIAL" opt QV £1 brown-lilac, wmk 3 crowns. Superb M, original gum bit disturbed at top of hinge removal, excellent centring & nice original colour. SG Spec L9, SG O11 cat £75,000 & much under-catalogued compared to non-official opt issues. Great rarity of GB philately with less than 30 M/UN examples recorded, of which most of the others are no gum, regummed or with faults. So this original gum example is definitely one of the best quality examples known. Provenance is ex the famous collections of Arthur Hind & of King Carol of Romania. 1987 RPSL photo-cert (Lot 2532). A good selection of Australian Kangaroos is highlighted by a very rare Small Multi Watermark £2 Black & rose, unlisted variety "bite in tail". Very fresh MUH, pristine never hinged original gum. SG 114(var) cat £4500 for normal M, should be at least double, £9000+ MUH. ACSC 57 cat $17,500 as normal. Very rare genuine MUH.(Lot 783).
Also in the Australian Pre-Decimal a KGV ½d Red-brown Plate proof on perf 14 single wmk paper. VF fresh UN as made. ACSC 66PP(1) cat $40,000. Of the seven printed, only two are known to have survived. Great rarity. 2015 Drury photo-cert.(Lot 841)
Following the Australia is a very strong World section of over 2300 lots (lots 1524 - 3818) includes singles, covers and an impressive selection of rarities.
In the British Colonial section is a Malaya - Straits Settlements 1904-10 KEVII $100 purple & green on yellow top value, wmk mult crown, chalk surfaced paper. VF fresh M, nice original gum. SG 140 cat £22,000. Major British Empire high denomination rarity. (Lot 2953). Also there is inBritish Central Africa a 1895 Arms £25 black & blue-green, top value, no wmk. Superb fresh M, perfect centring, nice original gum, fully intact perfs & bright colours - believed to be the best quality example in existence (most other examples of this stamp are regummed or reperfed, or badly off-centre). SG 31 cat £16,000+++. Important high value British Empire rarity. Exp 3 times inc Thier.( Lot 1658)
In the Great Britian Section a 1888 QV £1 brown-lilac, wmk 3 Orbs from a printing made in error on wrong wmk paper. VF fresh M, sl trace of diag crease, nice original gum & excellent colour. SG Spec K16, SG186 cat £72,000 = A$150,000+. Wmk orbs is many times scarcer than wmk Crowns. Major GB rarity in such attractive mint condition. (Lot 2597). Also a 1867-83 QV £5 orange, white paper. Superb fresh MUH, left marginal, pristine never hinged original gum, sl gum crease of no significance, intense bright colour & excellent centering. SG 137 cat £14,500 for M, should be at least double, £29,000 MUH. Very rare stamp mint as few people could afford to keep a £5 stamp in those times (5 gold sovereigns!). Great rarity MUH & stunning example of this key stamp. (Lot 2565)
In the Pacific region we have a Papua New Guinea -1960 "Postal Charges 6d" on 7½d with Postage blocked out, LL cnr marginal blk of 4 with Government imprint. F-VF MUH, usual sl tropicalised gum & sl vert wrinkle. SG D1 cat £3400+++ as singles. Extremely rare genuine as only 800 printed, so only 22 imprints would have existed, of which majority would have been split up, so definitely less than 10 imprint blks exist! (beware of forgeries, especially as there have also been cases of incorrect/forged certificates). 2001 Ceremuga AIEP photo-cert (Lot 3571). Also in the Cook Islands a 1892 Type-set 1d black vertical pr IMPERF between. VF UN. SG 1a cat £10,000. Great rarity, only several exist. 2013 Ceremuga photo cert (Lot 2136).
In the World section is the France 1940-41 Surch "50" on 90c Peace, lower marginal se-tenant blk of 4, error LR stamp "05" for "50". Superb fresh MUH. Maury 482/482c cat €11,500 -plus premium for se-tenant positional blk which should be +50%, so est €17,500. SG 678/678a cat £9500 for M singles & should be at least double, MUH in positional blk, so £19,000+. One of the rarest & most important errors of France. Exp Roumet & Brun AIEP, plus 2014 Scheller photo cert (Lot 1963). Also there is the Israel 1948 1st Coin "Doar Ivri" set 3m-1000pr, with FULL TABS imperf at base. VF fresh MUH, never hinged original gum, 1000pr Top Value superb fresh & in pristine quality. Bale 1-9, SG 1-9 cat £12,000. Very rare as most sets are forged or regummed. The Asian section includes a large range of PRC China with a good selection of Cultural Revolution sets and stamps including the 1968 Directive of Mao 8f set, se-tenant horiz strip of 5. Superb fresh MUH, unfolded, pristine condition. SG 2397a cat £8000, Yang W10. Rarity so nice.(Lot 2086) , also the 1967 Thoughts of Mao 8f set of 2 se-tenant strips of 5 & single. Very rare MUH & desirable with variety. 2014 RPSL photo-cert.(LOT 868). There is almost 1,700 lots of World stamps, covers and single country collections (LOTS 1919-3375) with the British Empire well represented, highlighted by Mauritius 1848 QV "Post Paid" 2d indigo-blue on greyish/bluish paper, EARLIEST IMPRESSION (position 10). Superb UN, 4 margins from small to very large, amazing deep colour. SG 4 cat £65,000++ & undercatalogued as only tiny number of unused earliest impressions exist. Another example (with 4 even margins) was sold in Europe in September 2015 for €150,000+ = A$230,000+! Very important classic stamp - as no unused examples of the "Post Office" issue remain in private hands, so the "Post Paid" earliest impressions are in effect the 1st stamps for a serious unused collection of Mauritius. Beautiful example of this classic rarity - provenance is the famous Ferrary collection - this was lot 80 of 1st auction of June 1921. 2014 Brandon photo-cert,(Lot 2785).

Great rarity in mint condition with less than 10 recorded (many of which have faults), with this example's beautiful condition making it among the 2 best condition example in existence. Very important stamp.1941 RPSL photo-cert LOT 2948) In the Pacific Region is the Papua - small Papua opt Lakatoi ½d black & yellow-green, vertical wmk, error opt DOUBLE, both equally strong & overlapping as always. There are over 2,100 lots of World stamps, covers and single country collections (LOTS 1613-3728) with the British Empire well represented, highlighted by Malayan States- Trengganu: a 1921-41 Sultan $100 green & scarlet, top value, wmk script. Superb fresh MUH, pristine never hinged original gum, beautiful bright colours. SG 47 cat £9000 for M, should be at least double, £18,000 MUH. Extremely rare genuine MUH example of this top value rarity -we have not seen another fresh MUH example offered anywhere before.(LOT 2971).
In the Pacific Region is the New Zealand 1862-64 QV Chalon 1/- yellow-green, wmk large star, provisional serrated perf 16 at Nelson. F-VF UN, sl stains/blemishes (and due to them cert says "unable to pass as unused"). SG 65 cat £4500 for U, unpriced M. CP A6dV NZ cat $5500 for U, unpriced M while other UN 1/- are about x5 U, so would be £20,000+ or $20,000+. Great rarity with only several U recorded & this example is unique in probable unused condition. Ex Joseph Hackmey. RPSL photo-cert(Lot 3238).

The black & rose shade is much less frequently seen in mint condition than the purple-black shade, while any of he £2 values are very rare in genuine MUH condition(LOT 686).
There are over 2,300 lots of World stamps, covers and single country collections (LOTS 1452-3778) with the British Empire well represented, highlighted by a Great Britain 1840 Official QV 1d black VR, letters "RK", variety on Queen's neck due to small piece of foreign matter adhering during printing & falling off etc (we are pricing it merely as normal stamp w/o any premium for variety). Superb UN, 4 large margins. SG Spec VR1, SG V1 cat £32,000 = A$60,000. Nice example of this classic rarity. 2015 BPA photo-cert(LOT 2324).
In the Pacific Region is the New Zealand 1931-40 Arms 35/- orange-yellow, single wmk Cowan paper. Superb fresh MUH, pristine never hinged original gum, excellent centring & bright colour. SG F161 cat £5000 for M, should be at least double, £10,000 MUH. This is by far the rarest of the Arms issues & virtually never seen in such beautiful MUH condition -1st example we have offered. Certificate can be obtained on request (Lot 3323).
