PALESTINE

Trial Overprint in Part-Sheets from the Estate of the Postmaster General

1920 E"I PALESTINA (Eretz Israel Palestine) trial overprint in complete set of 11 values in part sheets of 168 stamps, the 1pi value with the overprint in gold instead of silver as issued, some values with some perf. separation and few small pieces of missing selvedge, otherwise very fine and fresh.

The overprint on the issued stamps reads PALESTINA E"I. Interestingly none of the 1st setting overprint constant varieties exist on this trial overprint. Although the 4m part sheet shows the variety "Arabic 40" on positions 111 and 207.

Only 12 stamps of each value were previously known to exist, with one set in blocks of four in the Queen's collection. These known examples seemingly coming from these part sheets.

Biography: The Royal Philatelic Collection by Sir John Wilson, Asia page 49 states "1920 Essays of overprint with the two Hebrew words misplaced. This error was corrected before any issue was made. 1m to 20pi set corner marginal blocks of four, the overprint on the 1pi is in gold, afterwards changed to silver for the issued stamps"

Note: Colonel William Hudson was Postmaster General and head of the Palestine Post Office from 1917 to 1930.

One of Three Imperforate Sheets Sets Known

1948 Doar Ivri 250m, 500m and 1'000m IMPERFORATE SHEETS of 100; the 250m with sheet number 307312 printed on THIN YELLOW PAPER, 500m with sheet number 006 and 1'000m sheet number 18, all with original gum, some toning and minor faults as is to be expected with sheets, fine as such and extremely rare with only 3 imperforate sheets of these high values known according to Tsachor. (Bale $226'800 if broken up)

A highly desirable showpiece set and a rarity of Israel

1858 First issue 1/2 peso buff diagonal bisect used as 4 dineros on cover to Arequipa, tied by oval PUNO "ring" cancel in black, dated inside "Puno DIC 16, 1859", small corner fault on stamp

A major rarity with only two bisect covers known (the other is also from Puno, dated Jul 11 1860 which sold for CHF27'000 in Corinphila in 1994)

The Casoli Correspondence

1863 Three small neat folded entires all addressed to Monsignore Giacomo di Casoli in Reggio di Modena and described as follows:

- 1863 (22.7) Folded entire from Balzers via Chur in St. Gallen Switzerland, Como through the lake mail to Reggio di Modena, franked 1861 Austria 5kr rose and 10kr brown, with manuscript red "Balzers" alongside and neatly tied by ST.GALLEN CHUR/22.VII cds. Franking of 15 kreuzer paid the rate to the Swiss/Italian border, hence the manuscript "fco front", taxed '2' decimes (20c Italian cents) at the border hence the boxed "affranch:insuff:" applied alongside, scarce "NATANTE COMO - COLICO / 23.LUG.63" shipmail transit bs, cert. Ferchenbauer
