Free-franking privilege seems to have been quite expansive at this period of time.

Brown, Liverpool 27 Jany 1826" on reverse, fine red BOSTON APR 6 MS and matching SHIP, charged manuscript. "37½"(¢) and "Am(erican Postage) 2-4 (+) 1N2 (=) 3N2", "Pr New York" crossed out. Canadian mail was rarely routed via Boston at this date.
