British Somaliland. 1903 (Sep 13) Cover to England, posted unstamped with an "F.P.O 44" backstamp, endorsed "active service, no stamps available, R.W Townsend, Capt., 2 / K.A Rifles". Most unusually an Indian 1a stamp has been added in transit at Berbera, tied by the Base Office Berbera c.d.s, also backstamped at Aden and Plymouth. Light vertical folds and minor opening tears to upper edge but still a scarce and unusual campaign cover....

A.E Sandbach at Kasr-en-Nil Barracks, Cairo, reports the march past that afternoon before the Khedive and Sir Garnet Wolseley, and his imminent departure from Alexandria to England on the "Oxenholme".
